A projectile leaves the edge of a table and, while traveling horizontally at a constant 17 cm/s, falls freely a distance of 116 cm to the floor. If its vertical acceleration is 980 cm/s2, how long does it take to fall and how far does it travel in the horizontal direction during the fall?vf= vo + a (`dt)

0m/s= 17m/s+ -980cm/s^2 ( `dt)

17 m/s is a horizontal velocity.

980 cm/s^2 is a vertical acceleration.

Horizontal and vertical motion are independent of one another. The only thing they share is the time interval.

The two quantities should not appear in the same equation.

(-17m/s)/ ( -980cm/s^2)=`dt

`dt= .02s

ds= (v0+vf)/2 `dt

`ds= (17m/s+ 17m/s)/2 (.02)

`ds= 17m/s (.02)

`ds= .34cm"
