A ball is tossed upward with an initial velocity of 25 meters / second. Assume that the acceleration of gravity is 10 m/s^2 downward.

• What will be the velocity of the ball after one second?

answer/question/discussion: ->->->->->->->->->->->-> :

After one second the change in velocity will be by 10m/s^2, so we subtract this from our initial velocity to achieve our new velocity at 15m/s

#$&*

• What will be its velocity at the end of two seconds?

answer/question/discussion: ->->->->->->->->->->->-> :

For this we multiply the acceleration and the time to get a change in velocity of 20m/s/s. Subtract this from our initial velocity to see that after two seconds we have a velocity of 5m/s

#$&*

• During the first two seconds, what therefore is its average velocity?

answer/question/discussion: ->->->->->->->->->->->-> :

Initial velocity plus final velocity divided by two gives us our average velocity

(25m/s + 5m/s) / 2 = 15m/s

#$&*

• How far does it therefore rise in the first two seconds?

answer/question/discussion: ->->->->->->->->->->->-> :

The rise would be our change in velocity which is 5m/s - 25m/s = -20m/s

#$&*

• What will be its velocity at the end of an additional second, and at the end of one more additional second?

answer/question/discussion: ->->->->->->->->->->->-> :

After one second our last recorded velocity of 5m/s will decrease by 10m/s to -5m/s. Another second will bring on another decrease of 10m/s to -15m/s.

#$&*

• At what instant does the ball reach its maximum height, and how high has it risen by that instant?

answer/question/discussion: ->->->->->->->->->->->-> :

The ball would reach its maximum height at the moment the acceleration of gravity changed the velocity to 0m/s. At this very instant the ball will be as high as it can go and afterward will start moving towards the ground. I don’t know what equations to use to figure this out.

#$&*

• What is its average velocity for the first four seconds, and how high is it at the end of the fourth second?

answer/question/discussion: ->->->->->->->->->->->-> :

25m/s + (-15m/s) / 2 = 5m/s * 4 sec = 20m

#$&*

• How high will it be at the end of the sixth second?

answer/question/discussion: ->->->->->->->->->->->-> :

In 6 seconds the velocity will have changed by 60m/s, our initial velocity of

25m/s - 60m/s = -35m/s

Final velocity 25m/s + (-35m/s) / 2 = -5m/s * 6 sec = -30m/s
