The complement of an angle is 90 deg minus the angle.
In a right triangle, since the right angle takes up 90 of the 180 degrees in the triangle, there are 90 degrees left to be 'split up' between the two acute angles. The two acute angles add up to 90 degrees, so the two acute angles are complements of one another.
