Lab - Rubber Band Calibration

** **

** **

This is what it says on the Calibrating Rubber Bands lab website: Measure from one end of each rubber band to the other. You will therefore be recording the positions of both ends of each rubber band. Be sure you measure the end-to-end distance, from the point where one end of the rubber band ceases and the air beyond the end begins, to the similar point at the other end.

I don't understand this statement and have not started this lab other than making the chain. This statement above appears to tell me to measure from the bottom end of the first rubber band to the bottom end of the other. Which doesn't give the the length of the rubber band when subtracted. Maybe a better question would be, what am I measuring? The length of each rubber band, or something else? A visual would help. I know you want me to subtract two measurements, but it would really be easier for me to directly measure from one end to the other the distance you want measured. Can you explain what I'm suppose to be measuring?

@&

The sentence

"measure from one end of each rubber band to the other"

refers to 'each rubber band', i.e., to one rubber band at a time.

Whichever rubber band you are measuring has two ends.

The instruction tells you to measure from one end of that rubber band to the other.

And also to do this for every rubber band.

The idea is that you get the positions of all the ends of the rubber bands, without repositioning the ruler for each rubber band. Every repositioning adds uncertainty to the measuring process.

I also don't get the following statements:

In the box below, indicate in the first line the ruler markings of both ends of the first rubber band, entering two numbers in comma-delimited format.

In the second line indicate the distance in actual centimeters between the ends, to an estimated precision of .01 cm..

What am I suppose to be measuring? Can't I just measure it directly because this is difficult for me to interpret?

@&

The most important thing is to get your best measurement of the length of each rubber band.
