Lab 24 Momentum

** **

I do not understand this question in the lab:

In the space below give in the first line the velocity of the first ball immediately before collision, the velocity of the first ball immediately after collision and

the velocity of the second ball immediately after collision, basing your calculations on the time of fall and the mean observed horizontal ranges.

Without mass, how to you find the velocity of the first ball immediately before the collision? I assume the velocity immediately after for both balls is the horizontal distance divided by the time in the previous question, because horizontal velocity doesn't change, so vAve = 'ds/'dt would be the velocity of the balls after for both. For example, the mean distance for ball 1 is 26.19cm/0.394s = 66.57cm/s, and I did the same type of calculation for ball 2 with its horizontal distance and the 0.394s timeframe.

But how would I find the velocity before the collision for the

Did I calculate the velocities after the collision properly, and how do I calculate the velocity before the collision for the first ball?

This was somehow cut off, but I think I can answer the intended question and perhaps more.

One set of trials had the first ball falling to the floor without hitting anything. Another measured the horizontal distance the first ball traveled after colliding with the target ball. Another measured the horizontal distance traveled by the target ball.

The target ball was of course not moving before the collision.

This information is sufficient to determine the velocities of both balls before and after collision.

Your example calculations here were correct, so I don't think you'll have any trouble filling in the rest.

Query 24

** **

What are the questions in query 24 based on?

Here is a question from this assignment: `qWhy was it necessary to let the string go slack at the top of the circle in order to get the desired results?

I assume that somewhere we learned or did something??? Did I miss something we did? What is this based on?

@&

This is based on the activity in the Class Notes, where I swung an object around on a string and released it at the top of its arc.
