First we must calculate the change in momentum:

(mass*velocity) / time interval. Since an elastic collision causes a change in direction at the same velocity we must account for twice the velocity in one direction.

Then we can calculate the average force which is the product of the particle's momentum and the time interval of collision. If time interval is not given, it can be calculated by dividing the distance traveled, `ds, by the velocity of the particle. (`dt = `ds/v)

This 3-way distribution of force is related to the fact that for the average velocity vector we have v^2 = vx^2 + vy^2 + vz^2, where v is average magnitude of velocity and vx, vy and vz the x, y and z components of the velocity (more specifically the rms averages--the square root of the average of the squared components). **

I understand this concept. My explanation was not quite as thorough, but my process of solving is the same. I forgot to mention that in 3-dimensions, you must divide the calculated force by 3 to obtain the actual force because the particle could go in any direction.
