answer/question/discussion: ->->->->->->->->->->->-> (start in the next line):
A= the change in postion: 20-10=10 cm
B= the change in time: 9-4=5 s
So, the average rate of change is = 10/5= 2cm/sec
You know you are looking for the average rate of change. From reading the problem, you can see that you are given the change in position and the change in time. You find these by subtracting p2-p1, and t2-t1. From there, you plug in the known quantities to solve for the average rate of change.

If the velocity of a ball rolling along a track changes from 10 cm / second to 40 cm / second during an interval during which the clock time changes by 3 seconds, then what is the average rate of change of its velocity with respect to clock time during this interval?
answer/question/discussion: ->->->->->->->->->->->-> (start in the next line):
A= the change in velocity: 40-10= 30 cm/sec
B= the chnage in time, which is given: 3 sec
The average rate of change of the velocity is = 30/3= 10cm

You didn't include the units in your calculation, which should have read
30 cm/s / (3 s).
The numbers come out to 10.
The units do not come out to cm, nor does this calculation represent a displacement.

You are given the velocity of the ball. You need to find the change in velocity in order to apply it to the formula. You find the change by 40-10.
It is not necessary to find the change in time, since you are told the clock time change by 3 seconds. This is the changes in time, which is quantity B.
Following the formula, you divide A by B to get the average rate of change.

Your reasoning is excellent.
Only your units are amiss.

If the average rate at which position changes with respect to clock time is 5 cm / second, and if the clock time changes by 10 seconds, by how much does the position change?
answer/question/discussion: ->->->->->->->->->->->-> (start in the next line):
A is the change in position, which you are trying to solve for
B= the change in time, which is 10 sec
The average rate of change 5 cm/sec
To find the change in position, you do 10(5)= 50 cm
You are given the average rate of change of the position, and the change in time.
You are asked to find the position. From the formula, you plug in 5 for the average rate of change, and 10 for the change in time. Following the algrebraic steps, you find that the change in position = 50cm

10(5) has no meaning.
10 cm/s * 5 s does have a meaning.
Always include units with quantities that have units.

You will be expected hereafter to know and apply, in a variety of contexts, the definition given in this question. You need to know this definition word for word. If you try to apply the definition without using all the words it is going to cost you time and it will very likely diminish your performance. Briefly explain how you will ensure that you remember this definition.
answer/question/discussion: ->->->->->->->->->->->-> (start in the next line):
I will make sure I know the definition given in this question by practicing problems, and reviewing my notes.
#$&*
You are asked in this exercise to apply the definition, and given a general procedure for doing so. Briefly outline the procedure for applying this definition, and briefly explain how you will remember to apply this procedure.
answer/question/discussion: ->->->->->->->->->->->-> (start in the next line):
First, you need to write down the definition of the equation.
Next, you need to identify what you know and what you are looking for. Make sure to be aware whether you are given the change, or need to find it. From there, you plug in the known values and then solve for what you are trying to find.

Very good with application of the definitions. Your reasoning throughout was correct.
