VHCC COUNSELORS
The Counselors report directly to the Coordinator of Student Success.
The Counselors are responsible for the following professional student
personnel functions:
1. Supporting a liaison relationship between the Student Success Center and the
academic divisions.
2. Assisting in the development of an effective program of student advising.
3. Assisting in the development of the student development program of the
college including student organizations, student activities, and awards and
scholarships.
4. Selecting appropriate testing instruments, developing normative and
predictive data and interpreting test results for students and faculty advisors.
5. Conducting orientation classes, introducing students to all aspects of
College life, including career information and effective study skills.
6. Assisting the Deans, division faculty, and Learning Laboratory Manager in
devising, implementing, and administering the College Placement Testing program.
7. Participating in institutional effectiveness activities and processes when
requested including, but not limited to: strategic planning, college-wide
surveys, and related workshops/seminars; and implementing assigned institutional
effectiveness processes including, but not limited to program review, student
outcomes assessment, and annual departmental planning and evaluation cycles,
using a variety of measures and institutional data to improve programs and
processes as determined necessary and appropriate.
8. Interviewing all incoming students enrolling in degree or certificate
curricula who wish to have a counseling interview after completing initial
admissions forms.
9. Serving as a professional counselor for students and faculty members
including personal, academic, and career counseling.
10. Providing college transfer information for students wishing to transfer from
VHCC.
11. Providing career counseling and assisting the Career Planning
and Placement Specialist in providing job referral and job search skills for students.
12. Serving as resource persons to the Deans and to the teaching faculty in the
development of courses and programs.
13. Fulfilling such other functions as may be assigned by the Coordinator. The
Counselors will not in any case be involved in disciplining students.
