CAMPUS POLICE CHIEF
The Campus Police Chief is a police officer sworn by Washington County Circuit Court by sections 15-233 and 15-234 of the 1950 Code of Virginia as amended and is fully empowered to make arrests. The Campus Police Chief is authorized to carry firearms. The Campus Police Chief reports to the Vice President of Financial and Administrative Services and has responsibilities including the following:
1. Serving as Campus Police Officer (day shift), meets the applicable
standards for training as established by the Department of Criminal Justice
Services of Virginia (DCJS).
2. Cooperating with College authorities in enforcing regulations regarding
conduct of students, staff, and guests and reports rule infractions to the
proper authority.
3. Serving as Campus Safety Officer to conduct inspections, emergency drills,
and maintains the Campus Police Web Site, Emergency Response Plan, Continuity of
Operations Plan, Code Adam, and makes sure OSHA regulations are in place and
enforced.
4. Patrolling the College grounds for the purpose of controlling traffic,
including parking, and policing the campus to protect property and buildings.
Checking on speeding and parking violations and issues tickets to offenders.
5. Maintaining a flexible schedule to provide coverage in the above areas during
special events held at the College, including nights and weekends.
6. Assisting visitors to the campus by giving directions, traffic information,
and other general information.
7. Issuing parking decals to faculty and staff in accordance with established
regulations.
8. Maintaining traffic and/or crowd control in the event of fire or other
disaster.
9. Providing assistance to those involved in vehicle accidents on the College
grounds.
10. Assuming responsibility for taking all reports of personal injury, accident
reports, property damage or acts of vandalism.
11. Maintaining official College first-aid station and providing assistance,
including securing transportation to the hospital for emergency victims.
12. Maintaining state fleet vehicles and serves as agency transportation officer
through Fleet Management.
13. Delivering bank deposits daily.
14. Supervising Campus Police Officers (night shift) and directing College Work
Study students assigned to the Campus Police Office.
15. Participating in institutional effectiveness activities and processes such
as strategic planning, college-wide surveys, and related workshops; and
implementing institutional effectiveness processes related to security and
safety services including the annual departmental planning and evaluation cycle,
using survey results and other institutional data to improve work processes as
determined necessary and appropriate.
16. Overseeing the CarCare system to provide comprehensive insurance for college
owned vehicles.
17. Compiling yearly mileage and crash statistics for the Virginia State Police
of all college owned vehicles.
18. Maintaining campus crime statistics and reporting such annually for the
Clery Act.
19. Performing other assignments as designated by the Vice President of
Financial and Administrative Services and consistent with the classification.
