Use of the text is optional; this assignment is therefore optional.  A student who has performed well in prerequisite courses should be able to do required work without reference to the text.

However the text, or an equivalent source, can constitute a useful reference.

Text Section 1.1 work all the odd-numbered problems you can. 

If you can't get the correct answer to a problem before looking at the back of the book (check back of book after working), you should do more problems of similar nature, including even-numbered problems. 

The algebra in this section is part of your prerequisite courses, and you are responsible throughout the course for knowing the prerequisite algebra. 

As an alternative you may review basic algebra on a website or using a different text or reference.
