A ball starts with velocity 4 cm/sec and ends with a velocity of 10 cm/sec.

• What is your best guess about the ball's average velocity?

answer/question/discussion: ->->->->->->->->->->->-> (start in the next line):

The average speed is 7 cm/sec. You would add 4+10, then divide the sum by 2.

• Without further information, why is this just a guess?

answer/question/discussion: ->->->->->->->->->->->-> (start in the next line):

There is nothing to go by, it’s just knowledge that I already know.

• If it takes 3 seconds to get from the first velocity to the second, then what is your best guess about how far it traveled during that time?

answer/question/discussion: ->->->->->->->->->->->-> (start in the next line):

It took about 2.4 cm/second to get from the first velocity to the second. I divided 7 by 3 to get this answer.

The object appears to always be traveling faster than 4 cm/s. So in 3 seconds it would have to travel more tha 12 cm (4 cm every second for 3 seconds would imply 12 cm).
