Set 4 Problem number 4

Problem

Problem: What is the total momentum of two objects, one moving in the positive x direction at 16 m/s and the other moving at 17 m/s in the negative direction? The mass of the first object is 5 kg and that of the second is 98 kg.

Solution

Solution: The magnitude of the momentum of the first is ( 16 m/s)( 5 kg)= 80 kg m/s, and that of the second is (17 m/s)( 98 kg) = 1666 kg m/s. So we can see which object has the greater influence in the collision. Now the velocity of the second is in the negative direction so its momentum is actually -1666 kg m/s. The total momentum is therefore 80 kg m/s + -1666 kg m/s = -1588 kg m/s. The total momentum is thus in the direction (negative) of the more influential object.
