Text Section 6.1
Mth 164-41 students Summer 2011 note:
Section 6.1 in the Sullivan text corresponds closely with Sections 6.3 and
6.4 in the Bittinger text, which should prepare you for the problem
assignment given below. Correspondences with the Bittinger text will
be provided for each text assignment, and will appear in this purple font.
Note on the use of calculators: Graphing
calculator output is not sufficient justification for constructing graphs
(the only exception is when a problem specifically instructs you to use the
graphing calculator). A fifth-grader can learn to graph trigonometric
functions using a graphing calculator; use of a graphing calculator is not a
college-level skill. Graphs are to be constructed using the
definitions and properties of the functions, along with shifting and
stretching operations. On tests you will be graded on your
documentation of the process.
Ch 5
Problems Section 5.1 (use the Ch 5
Problems link to access the problems; note that
the former Chapter 5 corresponds Chapter 6 in recent editions of the
Sullivan text). Read the notes below, related to working the assigned
problems:
-
If you have difficulty working assigned problems, the odd-numbered
problems in your text typically have answers in the back of the text.
A good strategy when you are unsure of yourself is to work every other
odd-numbered problem in the text, and make sure your answers match those in
the back.
-
You need not write out your solutions to all problems in detail, and you
are not asked to submit solutions to all the problems. You may ask
questions about any problem using the
Submit
Question Form .
-
Warning: Many students simply ignore the problem assignment, go
directly to the Query, read the given solutions and submit them as their
own. Some students try to disguise the fact that they are using the
given solutions. Students who do so get full credit for submitting the
Queries, but typically find themselves unprepared for the tests, which
comprise the bulk of the course grade. Very few students have the
ability to perform well in this course without actually working the problems
and getting instructor feedback on the Queries.
-
The Open Query at the end of the section will ask you questions about
selected problems. Having worked the problems you should then submit the
open query for this assignment.
-
If you have not done so, it is
strongly recommended that you first review the document
Using Queries and Qa's as a Learning Tool.
To repeat, having worked the problems you then work through
and submit the
open query for this assignment.
Assignment 2

Sections 6.2 and 6.3 in the Sullivan text include
