3.3 Academic Rank and Administrative Titles

3.3 Contents

3.3.0 Academic Rank

The titles authorized for the four standard levels of faculty rank are Professor, Associate Professor, Assistant Professor, and Instructor. The qualifications for these are listed on the VCCS-29.

3.3.1 Special Rank

  1. Assistant Instructor may be used for individuals, appointed on a temporary or emergency basis for one year, meeting most of the minimum requirements for the instructor rank and who show evidence of being able to complete such requirements within one year. A one-year renewal may be requested by a College administrator for a person who is actively pursuing completion of the necessary requirements.

  2. Lecturer may be used when qualifications make it more appropriate than other titles. It may also be used for grant funded positions if VCCS-29 qualifications do not apply.
3.3.2 Professor Emeritus

The status of Professor Emeritus is a method of honoring persons for meritorious service and supporting their future professional contributions.
  1. Eligibility

Those eligible for nomination for Professor Emeritus status at VHCC include retired employees of the College who held faculty rank (usually Associate Professor or Professor) and who: 1) have a minimum of ten years of service in the Virginia Community College System; 2) made meritorious and significant contributions to the College, and 3) have given their consent prior to nomination.

  2. Selection

    1. The President appoints a Professor Emeritus Ad Hoc Committee of five to seven individuals representing the academic divisions, professional faculty, and administrative faculty to review College nominations for Professor Emeritus. The committee selects a chair responsible for submitting a report on the nominations to the President.

    2. Members of the College faculty, staff, and administration submit nominations for Professor Emeritus to the President in January. The President forwards these nominations to the Professor Emeritus Ad Hoc Committee for review.

    3. The Professor Emeritus Ad Hoc Committee submits its recommendations on the nominations to the President in February.

    4.  The President, after reviewing the report submitted by the Professor Emeritus Ad Hoc Committee, recommends nominations for approval to the College Board at its March board meeting.

    5. The College Board takes final action on the President’s nomination(s) for Professor Emeritus at its March board meeting.

  3. Benefits

Individuals named Professor Emeritus are honored on a permanent plaque located in the College Board Room and are accorded the following considerations during their lifetimes as a way to honor previous accomplishments and provide opportunities for future professional contributions.

    1. Listed as Professor Emeritus in the faculty section of the College Catalog.
    2. Afforded the right to march at the head of the faculty in the academic procession at commencement.
    3. Provided appropriate communications and other such courtesies as deemed appropriate by the College.
    4. On a space available/resource available basis, the College may provide additional benefits to support/encourage continued professional contributions in areas related to the field(s) of a Professor Emeritus such as community service, lectures, research, publications and other participation in the life of the College. Such benefits may include the following:

      1. Laboratory privileges for research and study
      2. Office space, clerical assistance
      3. Office supplies, copiers, and faxes

Appropriate titles of faculty rank and administrative office are granted to persons on the basis of the requirements of the position and the qualifications of the person holding such positions, in accordance with the Governor’s Consolidated Salary Authorization for Teaching and Research Staff in Institutions of Higher Education and the regulations of the VCCS.
