7.6 Response to Personal Tragedies Affecting
|
Virginia Highlands Community College seeks
to respond to personal tragedies affecting
members of the college community including
students, employees, board members and
others with close college affiliation. If a tragedy involves an employee, the division/department to which he/she reports traditionally notifies other College employees about the situation via e-mail. The Office of Institutional Advancement, however, serves as the primary point of contact for notification of incidents involving other members of the college community and for incidents occurring during non-office hours. In those cases, when someone learns of a death, serious illness, accident, or disaster affecting a member of the college community, he/she should immediately contact the Office of Institutional Advancement. Personnel in that office will alert others as appropriate. To ensure timely response, the Office of Institutional Advancement will publish a list of individuals to be contacted during non-office hours. The president will write a letter of support or condolence as appropriate. The treasurer of the Faculty Senate will send a card and/or flowers from the entire college per the Flower Fund procedures. In the event of a death, representative (s) of the College will participate in the bereavement service (s) as possible. The Office of Institutional Advancement will assist in coordinating attendance at the service (s) to ensure College representation. Other commemorative activities may be conducted as determined by the President’s Advisory Cabinet on a case-by-case basis.
