Preliminary Assignment (orientation and assessment)
Distance Students: BE SURE YOU HAVE CONTACTED YOUR INSTRUCTOR BY EMAIL. You will receive instructions for orientation to this course and startup.
See CD Contents and CD Contents Experiments and Problem Sets for table of contents.
Distance Students should have completed Orientation and Startup according to instructions received through student's VCCS email account. If instructions have not been received, email the instructor immediately.
Distance students should have filled out the Lab Kit Request Form and should have received materials. If not please do so. When your lab kit items are received you should check them against the items pictured at Physics II Lab Kit Items. If you do not have all the listed items, email the instructor immediately and include your mailing address.
The first two Assignments correspond to the first week of content assignments and are focused on lab exercises that can be done without the text, initial materials package or disks. This is to accommodate distance students who experience delays in registration, orientation to this course and in receiving materials. Typical total time reported by students for these lab exercises is about 7 hours. However note that the time of completion varies from student to student and can range from half the typical time to double. The remainder of these two assignments consists of questions which are mostly related to the lab exercises. Students who have recently completed their first semester of physics at this institution will have completed most or all of these lab exercises and are not required to repeat them; these students should, however, review their work on these labs, which is posted at the access site, and be prepared to use these ideas and techniques in this semester's lab work.
The lab portion of Assignments 2-4 (the typical second week of content assignments) are correspondingly shorter, with average reported completion time around 1 hour, with more emphasis on problems and theory.
Lab assignments in subsequent weeks are reported to average around 4 hours; some weeks average as little as 2 hours and others as much as 6 hours, balanced by greater or lesser emphasis on problems and theory
You will also soon be using vectors to analyze forces between charged particles. Second-semester students typically require a review of how vector magnitude, direction, and components are related, and of the basic process of vector addition and resolution of vectors. It is recommended that you begin a review of vectors as soon as possible, though this review isn't assigned until Assignment 2; see Assignment 2 for more information.
This program creates SEND files like the ones you have submitted for the Orientation. The SEND file contains in its filename the current date (e.g., 0214 for February 14).
Run Assignment 0 of qa_query_etc/query_ph2_assts_0_1.exe and submit the SEND file using the Submit Work Form.
Do the lab exercise Deterioration of Difference Quotients.
Solve each problem in this set before you look at its solution; always at least make your best attempt at a solution before reading the given solution. Then read the solution and take notes.
Keep practicing until you can completely solve the problems, which change every 5 minutes, without consulting the solutions.
Be sure you understand every given solution, including all the reasoning and not just the shortest way to get a right answer. Everything in this course builds on things you have learned before, so begin the course with good mastery of the ideas presented in the given solutions.
When you have completed the entire assignment run the Query program query_assts_2_10 for Assignment 2 and submit the SEND file using the Submit Work Form.
Physics II Introductory Problem Set 1, Problems 6-9 on electric fields created by by electric charges. Following a similar procedure to that in the previous instruction, master these problems.
